Is This Activism?

Is farming activism?

Is it activism to farm small when everyone else is farming big?

Is it still activism when “everyone” is no one that you yourself know personally and everyone you actually know who is farming is farming small?

Is it activism when it’s what you would be doing anyway?

Is it activism when it’s fun?

Is it activism when your farm is organic but almost everyone farming with you is still white?

Is it activism when one person in your community can say “I want to talk about how we can do some activism” and everyone nods?

Is it activism when your community shows up for that conversation like they said they wanted to?

Is it activism when your community wants to mobilize but doesn’t know who to mobilize with or for and the cows still need to be milked so instead you milk the cows and keep thinking?

Is it activism to get up in the morning to milk the cows no matter who the president is because the cows don’t care who the president is?

Is it activism to feel the farm need you and respond to that need?

Is stewardship activism?

Is it activism to pay really, really close attention?

Is compost activism?

Is it activism to feed the kitchen scraps to the chickens?

Is it activism to cut a chicken’s throat with one firm slice and know exactly what went into that bird and exactly what comes out of that bird and exactly how grateful you feel for the nourishment and the knowledge that you’ve gained?

(In truth it was a turkey this time, but in the past it’s been chickens, and the chickens make for better narrative continuity)

Is it activism to insist on the joy of sharing meals of roast chicken?

Is it activism to insist that joy is non-trivial?

Is it activism to transform the anxiety roiling your stomach into baking cookies?

Or is that self-care?

Is it activism to expand the notion of self-care to community-care?

Is baking cookies community care?

Is it activism to feel yourself warmly and gently held by a community?

Is it activism to warmly and gently hold those around you?

Is it activism to commit to gentleness?

If it is activism, is it enough?
